Let's Jazz, pt.2 By Matti Nives, 11/07
- Stan Tracey Quartet: Starless & Bible Black (RCA)
Listen to this and stare out of your window at night (after 4pm, that is).
It get's pretty dark, doesn't it?
- Oliver Nelson: Stolen Moments (Impulse!)
Follow with this one and suddenly there's a glimmer of hope at sight. Just
plain beautiful.
- Kenny Dorham: Sao Paolo (Blue Note)
This is where we all should be living right now.
- Horace Parlan: Headin' South (Blue Note)
The right way to go at this point. I can't stress this enough.
- LTC: Serenata (Ricky-Tick)
The latest from Italy. I bet they get excellent weather down there this
time of the year.
- Clarke-Boland Big Band: Broadmoor (Black Lion)
Finally, a lost gem that doesn't have anything at all to do with the
impending darkness. Jazz!
- Chico Hamilton: Conquistadores (Impulse!)
- Chico Hamilton: For Mods Only (Impulse!)
Chico is double trouble with these. 100% raw dancefloor jazz.
- Som Tres: Homenagem a Mongo (Blue Note)
Brasilian excellence. The perc track is just pure murder.
- Joe Cuba Sextette: Arinanara (Speeco)
It's a mad, mad, mad...guaganco! The liner notes suck but the rest of this
LP I'm surely "Diggin' the Most".
Plus one:
- Tema IV: Yayabo (Sonar Kollektiv)
Cuban soul. Very strange, very short, very addictive. I think I'll play it
again.
"Let's Jazz!, pt.1"
By Matti Nives, 9/07
Timo Lassy: The Soul & Jazz of Timo Lassy LP (Ricky-Tick)
Mr.Lassy delivers! THE jazz album of the year. Period.
The Stance Brothers: Kind Soul LP (Ricky-Tick)
Another strong Ricky-Tick effort managed by Teppo "Teddy Rok" Mäkynen.
Where would we be without this guy?
Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery: 13 (Death March) (Verve)
Jazz break beats, 60's style. Picking this one up is highly recommended -
despite the corny cover.
Duke Pearson: Chili Peppers (Blue Note)
Nothing rocks quite like this one.
Mark Murphy: Why and How (MPS)
"Why oh why is life so strange / It could be a true exchange". Well put.
Jon Hendricks: I'll Bet You Thought I'll Never Find You (Arista)
This is from Jon's album "Tell Me the Truth", and you need to hear this
samba-tinged jazz dance monster. That is the truth.
Jerome Richardson Quintet: No Problem (United Artists Jazz)
From the film "Les Liasons Dangereuses". No problem at all. Snap snap.
Horace Silver: Kathy (Blue Note)
Seeing the Somethin' Else loyal rock to this at the Jyväskylä Jazz Bar at
3.30am one Sunday morning easily goes down as one of the highlights of
2007. If not even more...
The Three Sounds: Black Orchid (Blue Note)
The copy of the album I have had been labeled as "poor" in terms of
condition. The audible hisses and pops are almost impossible to notice as
you give yourself to the mood set by the opening title track. Magic.
Cal Tjader: Samba do Suenho (Verve)
Six minutes of vibes-led bliss.
Plus one:
Rhythm Funk Masters: Gogo (Diamondi Records)
Not actually jazz but instead a rock solid afro cut for the discerning
dancefloor. Depth and charisma abound.
"10 things to carry around in a box"
by Matti Nives, 4/07
Future Warriors: Hierbabuena (Pingispong)
Domestic funk assault! Who are these guys? If you know, please contact me.
Dalindèo: Open Scenes LP (Ricky-Tick)
You need this!
Ubskiboo: Summer Heat 12" (Melting Pot Music)
4 killers. Period.
Jazz Juice: The Kicker (Freestyle)
Freddie Hubbard's 'Return of the Prodigal Son' revisited.
Dino & Franco Piana Quintet: Calypso (Deja Vu)
Italian jazz at its finest.
Why Wait: Amalgam (Deja Vu)
See above.
Timo Lassy: The Call (Ricky-Tick)
Forget "nujazz". We are living in an era of deep contemporary dancefloor jazz. This is the proof right here.
Alessandro Oliviero ft. Heidi Vogel: Higher Skies - K-Scope remix (Further Out)
Upcoming UK label to keep your eye on.
Clarke-Boland Big Band: Un Graso de Areia (MPS)
A piece of big band latin jazz that just blows you away.
Da Lata: Pra Manha (Palm)
Never get tired of hearing this one. A classic.
